How to fix a scratch or a chip in wood furniture

A marker covers a light scratch in a minute. A chip or a gouge needs filler first, then a marker for the grain.

First look

Read the damage before you start

Run a fingernail across the mark. If the nail does not catch, the scratch sits in the finish, and a marker is enough.

If the nail catches, the scratch goes into the wood. Chips, gouges, small holes and open cracks need filler to bring the surface back up to level.

Look at the color in good daylight. Most wood is more than one shade, so you may need a filler for the base and a marker for the darker grain lines.

Light scratches

A light scratch: the marker

  1. 1

    Clean the spot

Wipe away dust and polish with a damp cloth and let it dry.

  2. 2

    Test the shade

Try the marker on a hidden edge, such as the back of a leg, and let it dry before you judge the color.

  3. 3

    Draw with the grain

Run the marker along the scratch, not across it, and wipe off any extra with a soft cloth.

Chips and gouges

A chip or a gouge: the filler

  1. 1

    Match the shade

If no single filler matches, mix two. Start with the lighter one and add the darker one bit by bit.

  2. 2

    Press it in

Push filler into the chip with the scraper or spatula until it sits a little proud of the surface.

  3. 3

    Level it

Scrape it flat with the surface. The 28-piece kit adds sandpaper for a smoother finish.

Limits

When a kit will not do it

A kit covers spots. It will not replace a finish that is worn across a whole tabletop, glue down peeling veneer or fix a joint that moves. Those need sanding and a new finish, or a repair to the joint.

White rings from a hot cup or a wet glass sit in the finish itself, and filler will not lift them.
