How to measure a cabinet for a pull-out organizer

Four numbers, taken inside the cabinet, decide which organizer fits. It takes two minutes and a tape measure.

Step by step

Four numbers, taken inside the cabinet

  1. 1

    Width at the narrowest point

Measure from hinge to hinge, or from a side wall to the center post if the cabinet has one. Hinges sit inside the frame and take room on both sides.

  2. 2

    Height to the lowest pipe

Measure from the cabinet floor up to the bottom of the drain trap, not to the top of the cabinet. This number rules out more organizers than any other.

  3. 3

    Where the pipe drops

Note how far the drain sits from the left and the right walls. An L-shaped organizer puts its narrow top basket on the side away from the pipe.

  4. 4

    Depth to the closed door

Run the tape from the back wall to the inside of the closed door. A door shelf or a false drawer front takes some of it away.

Around the drain

Working around the drain and the disposal

Most sink cabinets have a drain in the middle and a trap that hangs down in a U. A garbage disposal adds a round body under the sink and pushes the low point further down.

The L-Shaped Pull-Out Organizer answers that with shape. Its top basket is narrow and sits on one side, so the pipe drops past it, and the wide lower basket slides out under the trap. It needs 16 in of height.

The Height-Adjustable Organizer answers it with height. It sets to five heights, and at the lowest it needs 14 in, so it can go under a trap that hangs low.

Safety

Cleaners under the sink and small children

The cabinet under a sink is where most homes keep sprays, pods and drain cleaner. The CPSC puts it plainly: Keep chemicals and cleaning supplies safely stored in a locked cabinet or box and out of the reach of children. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Our organizers do not lock. A pull-out basket makes a bottle easier to reach for an adult and for a child alike, so if small children live with you, put a child latch on the cabinet door as well.

The CPSC also says: Keep household chemicals in their original child-resistant containers. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) For laundry pods it adds: Store laundry packets in their original containers and out of a child’s sight and reach. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Base cabinets

A deep base cabinet is a different job

A base cabinet with no sink has no pipe, so the full height is yours. What matters there is depth and width.

The 21 in Pull-Out Cabinet Shelves needs a cabinet at least 21 in deep, 15 in wide and 16 in high. Its width opens from 14 to 22.5 in to meet the side walls, and each of the two shelves slides out on its own.

Questions

Questions about measuring

What if there is less than 16 inches under my sink pipe?

Then the L-Shaped Pull-Out Organizer will not fit, since it needs 16 in of height. The Height-Adjustable Organizer sets as low as 14 in.

Should I measure a cabinet from the outside?

No. The side walls, the face frame and the hinges all sit inside the outside size, so measure all 3 numbers inside the cabinet.
